Select The Size And The Place

Depending where you want to put a washable kitchen rug define how large the rug should be. The layout of your kitchen will also give you a good idea of where you can put the same.

A standard 2×3 foot rug is perfect for placing in front of a sink. Alternatively, you could have a runner rug that extends past your sink and across the length of your counter space. Leave about half a foot of open space on each end. If you’ve got a coffee nook, a foot rug will be much-welcomed during your morning coffee ritual.

A larger work rug is a lovely addition beside a kitchen island. If you’ve got a breakfast nook, a rug underneath the table creates a more defined space for eating. Like other dining rugs, add an extra 3 feet to the rug area to accommodate chair space. If you’ve got an open floor plan kitchen, a central area rug is a great functional and decorative piece to unify the entire area.

Pick The Material

As a general rule of thumb for washable kitchen rugs, you want the material to be non-absorbent. The fewer spills that seep through the fiber, the better.  Opt for flat-weave rugs as well. Rugs with a higher pile means more work. Here are some washable kitchen rug materials to consider.

  • Polyester And Nylon Rugs

Polyester and nylon are rug materials that are highly suitable for a kitchen. The durable and stain-resistant fibers ensure that they can withstand a busy kitchen space. Despite being sturdy, nylon and polyester rugs are soft and very comfortable to step on. A regular vacuum is enough to keep it clean until it’s time to put it in the washing machine.

  • Cotton Rugs

Cotton rugs are an all-natural and affordable washable kitchen rug option. Go for thicker cotton rugs as thinner ones tend to curl and not lie flat. When it comes to throwing it in the washing machine, wash it with cold water. Hot water is going to make it shrink.

  • Wool Rugs

Wool rugs are all-natural and anyone will tell you their comfort is unmatched. The material is very durable and sustainable as well. It’s especially suitable in the kitchen considering it’s non-flammable and resistant to stains.

Although this article covers washable kitchen rugs, wool rugs deserve mention. When cleaning wool rugs, it’s generally not recommended to stick it into the washing machine or dryer. Because wool has a natural-waxy layer on each strand, wool rugs are naturally water-repellent and won’t do well in dryer heat.

Fortunately, wool rugs can be spot cleaned and vacuumed to keep clean. When the time comes to wash it, take it outside and hose it down with some detergent. When the water that runs through it is clean, it’s ready to be air dried. Unless specifically stated on the care label, wool rugs aren’t to be placed in a washing machine or dryer.

Preventing Slips

Rugs and kitchen tiles don’t often mix because of the slip factor. Many washable kitchen rugs take this into consideration already. Many come with a non-slip liner. If this isn’t the case for your selected rug, make sure you add a non-slip rug pad. Not only does a rug pad make the kitchen safer, it also acts as a cushion. Your tired feet will thank you as you wash the dishes. An added bonus is dropped items are less likely to break or shatter.

Selecting The Style

One of the reasons why washable kitchen rugs are so appealing is because it’s a low-cost and low-commitment option to dressing up your kitchen. Minimal kitchens create the perfect backdrop for a patterned rug. Alternatively, more colorful bustling kitchens feel more centered with a simple rug. The best part, the rug choice is entirely up to you. And if you don’t like it, removal is a simple rug roll up away.
