Décor Items That Are Not Worth the Splurge, According to Designers

home decor items

Did you know 31% of Americans do not mind paying more than their intended budget if they find a décor item they like. However, are all décor items worth it? Top designers are spilling their secrets and here are a few you should never splurge on!

Let’s face it: refurbishing a home, even if that means one room, is not a cheap affair. As much as you’d love to purchase every pretty thing that catches your eye, you can’t have it all. So, you need to prioritize the stuff that’s necessary and worth the bargain while leaving out a few items which you can do without.

But then again, it’s not easy to figure out which accessories you would chuck and which ones are worth splurging on during a home improvement project.

To veer you towards a budget-friendly route, we are bringing you a list of décor items that are okay to skimp on.

Storage Bins or Baskets

We’re talking pricey, wicker baskets here! While a handicraft, woven laundry bin will add a bougie vibe to your space, they are not an absolute necessity. A polyester storage bag or a laundry basket will do as much the same basket while being super affordable. Remember what Sara Barney of Bandd Designs says “Storage items can easily be transitioned in and out as you grow tired of them, so spending less makes sense,” before you think of getting one.

Side Tables

Whether you’re revamping your bedroom or living room, a side table often comes in handy to hold your table lamp or books or a glass of drink while also acting as a coffee table. But they are not pieces to shine in your home space. So, you don’t need to bother spending a fortune on a oak wood table or an upholstered one. A lightweight bedside table with enough storage space is what can suffice your needs.

Kitchen Hardware

Cabinet knobs, faucets, or drawer pulls in your kitchen are the last home décor items you want to spend your dollars on. While it is important to pick sturdy, fine quality cabinets or durable countertop material, you can stick to low-end kitchen hardware. They are also easier to replace the hardware, in case they get damaged or there’s any minor issue. Renowned designer Anne Carr stands by the same and says “Inexpensive pull tabs and knobs are easy to find and often just as good-looking as more expensive ones.”

Over the Top Lighting

As long as your light fixtures are installed properly and deliver optimum illumination, they are good to go. Your home doesn’t have to resemble a museum or a theme park where you must invest in chandeliers and extravagant table lamps to complement the décor. When recessed lights can exude the same warmth as that of a pendant light, why would break the bank for the latter?

Exquisite Curtains

You can find draperies in a range of materials, design, and color in local retail stores as well as online. Even if you customize your curtains based on your needs, it shouldn’t cost you a lot. Just remember to pick the right fabric that lets natural light in while also adding that finishing touch that’ll accentuate your room.

Trendy Furniture

It can be very tempting to get the latest trending furniture for your space and make your guests go “WOW!”. Sadly these trends come and go quite quickly. Like Molly Kidd of Light & Dwell says, “Sometimes people really love a current trend, but a year or two from now, it won’t be ‘in’ anymore,”. Hence, think twice before you get an exquisite piece of Rattan furniture costing thousands of dollars that you won’t be able to replace without being guilty.

Statement Pieces

No doubt orante mirrors look spectacular and add a unique character to any space but you need not empty your pockets just for the sake of looks. Unless your space is specially designed to showcase art, it’s not really necessary to splurge on huge statement pieces or limited edition wall paintings.

The above recommendation applies to decor accessories as well. These pieces merely sit on a tabletop to be gazed upon. You will come across low-priced but aesthetic showpieces online or at flea markets that will look as good as a sophisticated ivory sculpture.

Designer Rugs

If you are thinking of getting exquisite sets of rugs, think twice. Rugs are the items with the highest amount of foot traffic. Unsurprisingly, they are also the ones to show the first signs of wear and tear. Hence, it while surfing for rugs, emphasize on functionality rather than trendiness.

Pillows and Throws

As a rule of thumb, designers across the globe advise to invest in good quality foundational furniture pieces. For example, sofas, bed frames and others. On the other hand, pillows and throws are rotational items with a gazillion different trends emerging every few months. We love and follow Beckly Shea’s humorous quote, “I love changing my pillows and throws from warm camel tones to more oatmeal and ivory finishes. It brightens a room but doesn’t cost me an arm and a leg!”

Final Thoughts

While we offered our suggestions, it’s ultimately your decision on how you want your home to look like. Whatever layout you have planned or theme you have in mind, it all comes down to your budget in the end. If you can easily afford something, you can very well get it for your space. However, if you’re short on your budget, this guide might be useful and you can save a few bucks without compromising on the decoration of your space.
