A New Chapter for Goodwill

For years, the Goodwill store has been a cornerstone for community donations and shopping in the D.C. area. The redevelopment plan will not only enlarge the store but also add a mix of residential units above it, making it the first Goodwill in the nation to undertake such a project. “This is a remarkable first,” noted Catherine Meloy, President and CEO of Goodwill of Greater Washington. The venture promises to offer below-market-rent rates, with a significant portion of the units designed for families, featuring two and three bedrooms.

Beyond addressing the housing crisis, the project aims to cater to broader community needs. A 3,000-square-foot child care center is included in the plans, serving both Goodwill employees and residents. This facility is expected to provide stability and spur economic opportunity. “This is a triple win for Arlington,” Arlington County Board Vice Chair Takis Karantonis highlighted, underscoring the project’s multifaceted benefits of combining socially responsible retail, affordable housing, and child care.
