In an effort to reclaim the cultural heritage of Denver’s historic Five Points neighborhood, The Burrell affordable housing development emerges as a crucial initiative providing a home for those deeply connected to the area’s rich history.
The Evolution of Five Points
Stefka Fanchi, CEO of Elevation Community Land Trust, sheds light on the transformation of Five Points from the “Harlem of the West” to a historically African American neighborhood. Gentrification and new developments, however, led to the displacement of individuals who played a vital role in shaping its unique character.
The Burrell Project Unveiled
Situated at 35th Avenue and Chestnut Place, The Burrell project, an initiative by Elevation CLT, aims to provide accessible and inclusive affordable homeownership opportunities. Fanchi underscores the goal of serving families with historic ties to Five Points or current residents dreaming of homeownership in the area.
Promising Start Honoring Charles Burrell
Eight out of the 49 available condominiums are already under contract, indicating a promising start for the revitalization effort.
Named after Denver musician Charles Burrell, known as “the Jackie Robinson of classical music,” the development pays homage to his groundbreaking contributions. Fanchi sees Burrell as a living legacy for equality in the music industry.
Charles Burrell himself expresses excitement about the project, sharing fond memories of Five Points and acknowledging the positive changes brought about by The Burrell development.
Anticipated Completion
The building is set to be completed in the spring, with the first condo owner moving in by mid-April. Fanchi encourages applications from individuals connected to Five Points, with eligibility for those at or below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
The Burrell development stands as a beacon of hope, creating an affordable and culturally rooted space, preserving the essence of Five Points.
