Navigating Naperville’s Response to Migrant Housing: A Closer Look at the City’s Consideration and Community Feedback

naperville's response to migrant housing

Naperville has decided against pursuing a city-managed sign-up sheet for residents willing to host migrant families, following initial consideration prompted by Councilman Josh McBroom. The city manager, Doug Krieger, conveyed that further exploration was deemed unnecessary as other organizations were already engaged in similar initiatives, making it redundant for city deliberation.

The proposal arose in response to the arrival of over 34,900 migrants in the Chicago area from Texas since August 2022. McBroom suggested the sign-up sheet as a voluntary means for residents to offer housing without relying on taxpayer dollars. Despite concerns about unannounced bus arrivals at suburban stations, McBroom’s idea did not gain traction among residents, with no reported interest in being placed on a housing list.

While there was council support for vetting the sign-up sheet concept, subsequent feedback indicated a lack of demand within the community. The city received substantial input, although the specifics of the feedback were not disclosed. Staff considered the idea redundant after discovering existing initiatives by organizations such as FEMA’s Shelter and Services program, the Illinois Department of Human Services, Housing Action Illinois, Catholic Charities, and New Life Centers.

McBroom clarified that the sign-up sheet was conceived as a respectful challenge to those supporting open border policies. He emphasized the humanitarian crisis and suggested that if individuals are not advocating for border security, they could contribute by opening their homes, emphasizing a voluntary, non-publicly funded solution. Despite the proposal, it appears that there is currently no interest from the community in participating in such a housing initiative.
